Intellectual and Methodological Goals

The program encourages students to:

  • Foster a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of American culture
  • Develop an understanding of American civilization within an international context
  • Acquire knowledge in the following areas:
    • American social history and related areas of historical inquiry
    • American material culture, including the decorative and visual arts, architecture, historical geography, interior design, historical landscapes, and technology.
    • Methodologies and content of compatible academic fields outside of History.
  • Contribute to scholarly discourse through research, lectures, publications, and exhibitions
  • Master the skills necessary to analyze, record, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information about texts, objects and behaviors by:
    • Training in field based methodology.
    • Presenting research to scholarly and public audiences.
    • Writing a dissertation.
    • Actively participating in field trips, symposia, and discussion groups.
