Intellectual and Methodological Goals
The program encourages students to:
- Foster a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of American culture
- Develop an understanding of American civilization within an international context
- Acquire knowledge in the following areas:
- American social history and related areas of historical inquiry
- American material culture, including the decorative and visual arts, architecture, historical geography, interior design, historical landscapes, and technology.
- Methodologies and content of compatible academic fields outside of History.
- Contribute to scholarly discourse through research, lectures, publications, and exhibitions
- Master the skills necessary to analyze, record, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information about texts, objects and behaviors by:
- Training in field based methodology.
- Presenting research to scholarly and public audiences.
- Writing a dissertation.
- Actively participating in field trips, symposia, and discussion groups.
