| INTRODUCTION The Allies Program will establish a campus-wide network of individuals who can act as resources for members of the campus community who have questions or concerns related to LGBT issues. UD Allies will prominently display the Allies Program logo, thereby highlighting their visibility to LGBT community members. Allies will be expected to support individuals who have questions or concerns about such issues as sexual identity, sexual harassment, community resources and support systems. Allies are not expected to be trained counselors, but rather good listeners, who can direct those who come to them for assistance to trained professionals and resources. Allies will also be able to consult with one another, as well as the LGBT Community Office and the Center for Counseling and Student Development. We would also like to consider Allies to be allies to the idea that LGBT individuals have the right to be respected. Thus, being an Ally means that you will not tolerate homophobic and heterosexist comments and actions, but will address them in an educational and informative manner. Colleagues and students have a right to their opinion; however, if someone is stating myths or misinformation about gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered individuals, you will inform them of more accurate information in a respectful manner. The contents of this packet are not all of the resources available to Allies, but rather basic information that is supplemented by resources available at the Allies WWW site http://www.udel.edu/allies or from the LGBT Community Office. Please read through the information contained in this packet, and then, at your leisure, look at the resources on the WWW site. If you have any questions, please contact the LGBT Community Office in person by visiting Hullihen 305, by phone at 831-8703 or by email at lgbtoffice@udel.edu. If there is a mental health emergency, please contact the counseling center at 831-2141. |
