Text: Statistics for Business and Economics by James T. McClave, P. George Benson and Terry Sincich (Thirteenth Edition) Pearson 2018
Course Description: Statistics can be considered a tool to aid a researcher in organizing and summarizing data, to make inferences about this data and to clearly and meaningfully communicate any findings to others. In order to accomplish some of this we will be looking at graphical descriptions of data as well as numerical descriptions. We will talk about probabilities and how to work with discrete and continuous random variables. Finally we will look at sampling distributions and hypothesis testing.

Test Topics:
Test 1 This test will cover graphical descriptions of data such
as
bar charts, pie charts, stem and leaf displays and histograms. It
will also cover
numerical
descriptive measures such as the mean, median, mode, range, variance
and
standard deviation.
Test 2 This test will cover some probability and will cover some
discrete random variables such as the Binomial, Poisson, Hypergeometric
and
Geometric
Random Variables.
Test 3 This test will cover continuous random variables such as
the
Uniform, Normal and Exponential. It will also cover sampling
distributions
and
how to determine the appropriate sample size.
Test 4 This test will cover estimation and tests of hypothesis
for
single samples as well as a few 2 sample cases. We will be discussing
observed
significance levels, type I and II error probabilities and how to make
inferences about population mean or mean(s).
Grading Policy:

provided you attend class regularly.
Therefore, your final course grade will
be based on 500 points.

Class Guidelines:
1. You will not be expected to memorize statistical formulas,
only
to apply them. You may therefore put statistical formulas on index
cards.
You may put the formula and what the variables stand for.
You may not
put
examples of how to use the formulas on your index cards.
2. I will inspect your index cards before the tests.
3. All work must be shown if you expect full credit for your answer. Partial credit will be given.
4. There will be no make-up tests without a reasonable documented excuse.
5. Homework will not be collected but we will be discussing it in class and your tests are based on these assignments.
6. You will need to use a non- graphing calculator for this course, preferably one that can handle some basic statistics functions.
7. There may be pop quizzes.
8. Part of your test grade will come from computer assignments
given
to you to do in the Dover Lab with Excel.
Make sure to activate your UD e-mail accounts.
