Text:   Precalculus Mathematics for Calculus, 7th edition by James Stewart, Lothar Redlin, Saleem Watson,
            Brooks/Cole, 2016

Course Description:  This  four credit course is designed to better prepare you for calculus
(MATH241). In this course we review some of the necessary algebra skills it is expected you are
already somewhat familiar with. We continue by discussing absolute value, polynomials, quadratics,
rational equations, exponential and logarithmic functions and their graphs. All topics included in
MATH115 are covered as well as
additional topics in functions, trigonometry, linear systems, and
nonlinear systems.

Only four credits from any combination of MATH113, MATH114, MATH115, MATH117,
MATH127, MATH170 and MATH171 can count toward graduation.

Test 1:   This test deals with fundamental skills such as understanding the real number system, exponents,
radicals, polynomials, factoring, radical expressions, linear equations, absolute value, and symmetry.
Test 2:   This test deals with working with functions and their transformations, determining inverses of
functions, polynomial functions and rational functions. It also covers somebasic optimization and
using the critical point table approach to solve inequalities.
Test 3:  This test deals with working with exponential, and logarithmic functions and their graphs.
It also covers some of the basic unit circle methods in trigonometry.
Test 4:  This test deals with some beginning topics in right triangle trigonometry.  It will cover working with
topics in analytic trigonometry such as addition and double angle formulas and trigonometric
               identities.

Grading Policy
:
TEST #1                     100%                                      There will be 4 tests and a final exam.
#2                    100%                                      The final will count twice. One of these
#3                    100%                                      six grades will be dropped so your final
#4                    100%                                      grade is based upon 500 points.

Class Guidelines:

 1.  You are responsible for all class material if you miss a class.
 2.   If you miss a test you must have a documented medical excuse, or a reason I feel is appropriate
in order to take a makeup.  Please contact me at the office or at home within 24 hours if this
happens to let me know what is wrong.
 3.  Homework will be reviewed during class and the Friday lab.
 4.  Lab attendance is required until the first test.  If you maintain  a "C" average, lab becomes optional.
If at any time your average falls below a "C", you will be expected to come to the lab.

 5.  If for some reason you cannot make a Friday lab, see me before that lab to set up an appointment to look
      over your homework.
 6.  Although the tests are worth 100 points, there will be some pop quizzes given at various times that will
give you an opportunity for extra credit.  These quizzes are similar to homework and there will be no
       makeup
quizzes given.
 7. Only non-graphing calculators will be permitted.
 8.  Most of your tests require graphing. You are to bring your own graph paper for these tests.

Academic Honesty Policy:  Cheating is not tolerated.  All UD students are required to be familiar with and abide by the Student Code of conduct as promulgated in The Official Student Handbook http://www.udel.edu/stuguide/13-14/code.html#honesty.  This policy will apply to every exam, quiz, homework, and any other assignment given in this course.  Violations of any kind can result in a failing grade for the course.
