Text: Precalculus Essentials, Fourth Edition Robert Blitzer, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2014

Course Description:  This course is designed to better prepare you for calculus (MATH221). In this couse we review some of the necessary algebra skills it is expected you are already somewhat familiar with. We continue by discussing absolute value, polynomials, quadratics, rational equations, exponential and logarithmic functions as well as trigonometry.  We will also be covering how to graph the various functions discussed in the course.

Test 1: This test deals with prerequisite skills such as understanding the real number system, exponents, radicals, polynomials, factoring, radical
expressions, linear equations, and absolute value.

Test 2: This test deals with working with functions, linear equations formats, transformation of functions, the algebra of functions, inverse functions,
             distance, midpoints, and circles.

Test 3: This test deals with working with polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions and their graphs. It also covers some basic
optimization and using the critical point table approach to solve inequalities.

Test 4: This test deals with some beginning topics in trigonometry.  It will cover working with degrees, radians, right triangles, the six trigonometric
functions, addition formulas and how to work with some trigonometric identities.

Grading Policy:
TEST #1  100%                                  There will be 4 tests and a
#2  100%                                            final exam.  The final will
#3  100%                                            count twice.  One of these 6
#4  100%                                            grades will be dropped so your
FINAL (Counts   100%                      final grade is based on 500
   Twice) 100%    points.

                                                            A     93 and above           C    73-76
                                                            A-    90-92                       C-    70-72

                                                            B-    80-82                        D-   60-62
                                                            C+   77-79                        F     below 60%

Class Guidelines:

 1. You are responsible for all class material if you miss a class.

 2. If you miss a test you must have a documented medical excuse, or a reason I feel is appropriate, in order to take a makeup.  Please contact me at
the office or at home within 24 hours if this happens to let me know what is wrong.

 3. Homework will be reviewed during class and the Friday lab.

 4. Lab attendance is required until the first test.  If you maintain  a "C" average, lab becomes optional.  If at any time your average falls below a
"C", you will be expected to come to the lab.

 5. If for some reason you cannot make a Friday lab, see me before that lab to set up an appointment to look over your homework.

 6. Although the tests are worth 100 points, there will be some pop quizzes given at various times that will give you an opportunity for extra credit.
These quizzes are similar to homework and there will be no makeup quizzes given.

 7.  Only non-graphing calculators will be permitted. If you need to borrow one for a test a few will be available.

 8.  Most of your tests require graphing. You are to bring your own graph paper for these tests.
