Text:  College Mathematics and Statistics (custom edition for University of Delaware)
by Larson, Hodgkins, Brase, Brase,  Cengage 2016.

Course Description:  This course is designed for students who wish to satisfy the math requirement for graduation and who are not planning to continue taking math courses.  The course will cover some concepts in algebra, how to work with linear equations and functions, how to work with inequalities and use graphing for simple linear programming.  The course also covers some nonlinear models such as quadratic, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.  Finally, probability and some basic statistics topics will be covered.  It would be beneficial to you to have a calculator that has a statistics mode and has keys such as yx, ex, lnx, sin, cos, tan.

Test 1: This test will cover sets, real numbers, exponents, factoring and fractions.  It will also includesolving linear equations
and inequalities, graphing linear equations, working with functions and finding equations of lines.

Test 2: This test will cover solving systems of equations, solving business problems involving break even points, and using graphing to solve linear programming problems.
It will also cover quadratic functions, parabolas, and some business applications of quadratics.

Test 3:  This test will cover working with exponential and logarithmic functions and their properties.  It will also cover sequences and how to use these to solve simple and
compound interest problems.  Finally it will cover some right triangle and unit circle trigonometry.

Test 4:  This test will cover some of the principles of probability and statistics.  It will cover some  basic probability concepts and the use of combinations and permutations.
             The statistics
portion of this test will cover bar graphs, pie charts, stem and leaf displays, histograms, measures of central tendency and variation, the normal distribution
             and a little on linear
regression.

Grading Policy:

TEST #1         100%                                      There will be four tests and a
#2                    100%                                      final exam.  The final exam will
#3                    100%                                      count twice.  One of these six
#4                    100%                                      grades will be dropped so your

Class Guidelines:

 1.        You are responsible for all class material if you miss a class.

 2.        If you miss a test you must have a documented medical excuse, or a reason I feel is appropriate, in order to take a makeup.  Please contact me at the office or at home
within 24 hours if this happens to let me know what is wrong.

 3.        Homework will be reviewed during class and the Friday lab.

 4.        You are required to come to the Friday lab until the first test.  If you receive a "C" or better on the test, lab will be optional as long as your average remains above a "C".

If you do not get a 73 or better on the first test, you are required to come to lab until your average is above 73.

 5.        If you are unable to come to a Friday lab, then please set up an appointment before the lab to see me during the week instead.

 6.        Although the test are worth 100 points, there will be some pop quizzes given at various times that will give you an opportunity for extra credit.  These quizzes are similar to homework
and there will be no makeup quizzes given.

7.        Only non-graphing calculators will be permitted.

8.        Most of your tests require graphing. You are to bring your own graph paper for these tests.
