The hospital serves thousands of families from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey as a full-service hospital for children from birth through age 17. The inpatient services of the 128-bed hospital include three medical-surgical units, a rehabilitation unit, an intensive care unit, and a neonatal intensive care unit. It is a center for the treatment of many different childhood diseases, including cancers, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy and kidney disease. The hospital provides a broad range of pediatric sub-specialty care. Over 40 medical, surgical, and dental specialties are represented in outpatient services. Specialty clinics offer team treatment for a variety of conditions from allergies to diabetes to Lyme disease. Volunteers assist with direct and indirect patient contact and behind the scenes in clerical departments. Openings for these positions change constantly. Volunteers are matched with the assignment, day and time that best meets their needs.

Habitat for Humanity International's purpose is to eliminate substandard housing in our communities. Habitat has a policy of helping people who want to help themselves. Families are selected to receive Habitat houses based on their need, their ability to pay, and their ability to work with Habitat for Humanity. HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) is a structured mentoring program in languages, arts/reading, mathematics, and/or Spanish language arts. Each volunteer will be paired with a student one-to-one for the same time period of 30 minutes each week. A user friendly lesson plan and instructional materials will be provided. HOSTS has recently been recognized by the Education Commission of the States as one of only three best practices in reading.

The Committee provides specific emergency services to families and individuals in the Newark area including: Food Cupboard which operates weekdays and provides about 1 week's food; Christmas Baskets which are given to about 375 families the week before Christmas. Fund raising activities go on all through the year to help pay for school and work shoes, utility bills, medicine, rent, glasses and other necessities. This is an all-volunteer group of people working to help people in the Newark area.

Head Start was created to prepare low income preschoolers for grade school. It primarily serves 3 - 4 year old children and their families, who must be below federal poverty levels. Its intentions are to teach children the skills they will need to succeed in school and help children learn to socialize and to develop their cognitive abilities. 1995 Early Head Start was created due to the overwhelming evidence that the first 3 years of life are critical to brain development. Services include child development, family development, community building, and staff development.

READ-ALOUD Delaware is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of reading in Delaware. The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware is a "home away from home" for families of ill or injured children receiving treatment at a local hospital. Parents find the support and understanding of other families in similar situations, as well as safe, inexpensive lodging. New support services provided by the Ronald McDonald House include Ronald Rooms in local hospitals. The Ronald Rooms at Christiana Hospital in Stanton and Bayhealth-Kent General in Dover offer comfort and support to families with babies receiving treatment in the special care nurseries.

Shoes That Fit of Newark Delaware builds the self-esteem of needy school children by providing them with new shoes and clothing. This goal is achieved by partnering companies, groups, and individuals in the community with schools that have children with clothing needs. Volunteers can sponsor a child by purchasing the requested clothing items or making monetary donations so that the clothing items may be purchased by others. Depending upon the school, volunteers may also interact with the sponsored children by delivering the clothing to make sure it fits. There are normally Fall and Spring campaigns to ensure that children have the proper seasonal clothing. Students can act as individual volunteers (raising money, purchasing clothing and making deliveries) or volunteer coordinators (coordinating a group of volunteers to sponsor one or more children) depending upon their interest and available time.
