Head Start was created to prepare low income preschoolers for grade school.
It primarily serves 3 - 4 year old children and their families, who must be
below federal poverty levels. Its intentions are to teach children the skills
they will need to succeed in school and help children learn to socialize and
to develop their cognitive abilities. 1995 Early Head Start was created due
to the overwhelming evidence that the first 3 years of life are critical to
brain development. Services include child development, family development,
community building, and staff development.

Shoes That Fit of Newark Delaware builds the self-esteem of needy school
children by providing them with new shoes and clothing. This goal is achieved
by partnering companies, groups, and individuals in the community with schools
that have children with clothing needs. Volunteers can sponsor a child by
purchasing the requested clothing items or making monetary donations so that
the clothing items may be purchased by others. Depending upon the school,
volunteers may also interact with the sponsored children by delivering the
clothing to make sure it fits. There are normally Fall and Spring campaigns
to ensure that children have the proper seasonal clothing. Students can act
as individual volunteers (raising money, purchasing clothing and making
deliveries) or volunteer coordinators (coordinating a group of volunteers to
sponsor one or more children) depending upon their interest and available time.
