Discussion of eRA VI (Electronic Research Administration) Conference attended by Gerri Hobbs and Becky Boutz:

The Conference, sponsored by the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) was held in Portland Oregon, Aug. 17-18, 2001. It was attended by most educational institutions and many heads of Government Agencies.

• The use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to exchange data electronically between UDEL and Gov. agencies is not going to be a widespread option in the near or even distant future. NSF is working on a pilot program with MIT, but they are the only Agency actively working on this.
• The NIH Commons Grants Proposal Entry Portal for all Government Agencies project is moving very slowly. The Agencies (18 out of 24) meeting bi-weekly to discuss common data standards etc. It is a very slow process and funding is limited, but they are making some progress.
• Becky attended a workshop/lab on hooking databases into Adobe Interactive Portable Document Format (IPDF). On the form this allows you to type in the data, save it and then retrieve it for later use. She believes that we need to pursue the use of these forms as it will save a great deal of time. Becky will continue to test this process.
• Gerri learned about a program to receive the ONR awards notices electronically and then populate a database with them. She obtained the software from her contact and is testing it.
• More and more educational institutions are buying and deploying the PeopleSoft Applications. Most are installing the Financial Module- but many have not decided whether or not they will load the Grants/Projects modules.
