Myles Brand
President of the NCAA

Welcome and thank you for coming. My name is Dr. Matthew J. Robinson, Associate Professor of Sport Management/Legal Studies Faculty Member and Director of the Sport Management Major.
Before I introduce Dr. Brand I would like to recognize those who were instrumental in making this evening possible. First I would like to acknowledge the General Education Initiative, the Center for Teaching Effectiveness, the Delaware Interdisciplinary Ethics Program and Information Technology User Services for funding the grant that enabled Dr. Brand to be with us this evening. The grant funded the development of a Ethics and Issues in Sport Management course that would incorporate technology and guest speakers into teaching ethics to aspiring sport managers. Dr. Brand spoke in that class earlier today and the students will be discussing that lecture and tonights lecture in an electronic discussion group later.
Specifically I would like to thank University of Delaware President Dr. David Roselle for his support of the visit by Dr. Brand, as well as Mr.Edgar Johnson, Director of Athletics for his assistance in planning the day. Finallly I would like to thank Dr. Fredrick Adams, Chairman of the Philosophy Department and Director of the Delaware Interdisciplinary Ethics Program, who over a round of golf suggested inviting Dr. Brand to campus and through his relationship with Dr. Brand was instrumental in the invitation being accepted.
I would like to add that after having played golf with Fred and having the chance to compare the score he reported after 18 holes to his level of play over the same 18 holes, I was not sure if I should be dismayed over the fact the University allows him to teach ethics or glad that he is not teaching math to our students.
