550-bed teaching facility with a 28 bed Rehabilitation Unit and a 6-bed
Burn Unit. Hospital located 10 minutes north of Center City. The PM&R
Department includes physiatry, physical therapy, occupational therapy,
speech pathology, psychology, and therapeutic recreation. Therapists are
assigned to teams with the emphasis being 1) neurology/neurosurgery 2)
orthopedic surgery/trauma, 3)cardic/pulmonary/general medicine and surgery,
4) vascular/burn unit/oncology, 5) rehab and 6) pediatrics. We currently
treat only a minimum of outpatients in the gym, mostly amputees and lower
level patients who need more one-on-one care. There are many opportunities
to observe other disciplines such as speech and occupational therapy, psychology,
cardiac rehab, surgeries and orthotic/prosthetic measurements and fittings.
There is an active inservice program, as well as the opportunity to participate
in various team rounds.

the Rock Pavillion in the main hospital building) at 7:00 AM. Students

or stretch pants. White lab coats should have school patches. Directions:
in library file and in the student manual. Housing can be obtained at University

early as this is available to all Philadelphia area students on a first-come,

Allegheny Graduate Hospital is a 320 bed teaching hospital located
in Center City Philadelphia. The hospital was established in 1927 with
a new hospital building in 1978. It was formerly part of the University
of Pennsylvania, and existed as a independent institution for many years.
In 1996, the Graduate Health System was taken over by Allegheny Health,
Education, and Research Foundation (AHERF) which consists of hospitals
and universities throughout PA. The newest addition to Allegheny, Graduate
is The Orthopedic Hospital, with specialties in joint replacement, spinal
surgeries and sports medicine. Other specialties at Graduate include cardiac
surgery, an AIDS research program, and the cancer program, including stem
cell transplants. Available rotations include acute care, bedside, outpatient
orthopedic, cardiac rehabilitation; and inpatient orthopedic.

Terrio Therapy-Fitness, Inc. is a private Physical Therapy owned company.
It currently comprises of three outpatient clinics throughout Bakersfield.
A 4th clinic is soon to open up later this year. Bakersfield is a city
of 350,000 located in the San Joaquin Valley, 100 miles north of Los Angeles.
The clinics see primarily general and sports orthopedics ranging in age
from children to geriatrics. Therapy is very exercise-oriented with emphasis
on hands-on manual therapy when appropiate. We also have a very strong
component of computer usage as all evaluations and progress notes are done
on laptop computers via evaluation forms that we created and that are web-based.
Besides our outpatient clinics, we supply all Physical Therapy services
for one of the major acute hospitals in town - Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.
We also have employed Occupational Therapists that provide all pediatraaic
services for two of the major school districts in town along with outpatient
pediatric services located at Bakersfield Memorial Hosiptal. Students will
work the sames hours as their CI and will be expected to do one inservice
during their affiliation.

Therapy Services of DE is a private corporation whose emphasis is on
providing contractual therapy services in public and private schools, nursing
homes, home health care agencies as well as private patients. The affiliation
for the second year student will be located in several public schools in
New Castle county, DE and proximate areas of New Jersey. The caseload will
primarily consist of school age children ages 0-21 with various disabilities
including cerebral palsy, learning disability, developmental and cognitive
delays and orthopedic problems. The student will participate in individual
educational planning meetings, interdepartmental staffing meetings and
group planning meetings. The emphasis of this affiliation will be to introduce
the student to the educational model and the role of the physical therapist
consulting within the school setting.

A university-based teaching hospital that is a 700 bed acute tertiary
care center with a 26 bed Rehab unit is a level 1 trauma center, and is
the acute section of the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of Delaware
Valley. The physical therapy department is divided into acute care, pediatrics,
outpatients, work hardening, general rehab and spinal cord injury services.
Rehab. patient population includes stroke, Guillain Barre, amputees, and
other neurological disabilities. Ambulatory Care treats a wide variety
of orthopedic and neurological disorders. Regardless of assignment, students
can spend time in other specialty areas. Students will receive several
lectures/week on both required and chosen topics. There is opportunity
to observe or participate in patient care conferences (acute, rehab, SCI,
trauma, cardiac), rounds, surgery, EMGs, and staff inservices. Students
are required to give a 45 minute inservice to staff.

Services Dept. sees a varied inpatient and outpatient caseload including
orthopedics, acute neurological diagnoses, wound and burn care, and pediatrics.
Thomason CAREs Rehabilitation Center (TCR) is a satellite outpatient clinic
providing comprehensive outpatient PT and OT services including orthopedics,
industrial medicine and aquatic therapy. Students will have the opportunity
to work with a health care team consisting of resident physicians, nursing
personnel, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists and
social workers. Frequent opportunities for observation of surgery and specialty
clinics are available.

Tidewater PT is a multi-site, private physical therapy outpatient practice
that is a certified medicare rehabilitation agency with small, rural clinics
in lower Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The case load is approximately
90% orthopaedic, including work-related inuries, motor vehicle accidents,
sports injuries and general aging problems. In addition to manual orthopedic
care, orthotic fabrication, work hardening and functional capacity examinations
are offered as needed. A few locations offer pool therapy (usually off-site).
Clinics usually have 1 physical therapist working at a time with occasional
overlap in busy clinics and many clinics have a physical therapist assistant.
All clinics have secretarial and technical supportive staff. The physical
therapist specialists in women's health, including urinary incontinence
and lymphedema, as well as physical therapist specialists in electrophysiology
(EMG) travel to various clinics as necessary. Busy clinics are open from
7 AM to 7 PM but the hours of operation are adjusted as necessary in less
busy clinics.
Students would often be required to travel between 2 or more sites,
therefore, an automobile is a necessity. There are no specific housing
or boarding arrangements through the practice, but individual clinics would
be happy to assist students in finding lodging near the assigned sites.
The total staff of the practice is 18 PTs, 8 PTAs, and contract OTs,
Speech Therapists and Social Workers as needed in addition to secretarial,
technical support, billing and administrative staff.

Jersey just 20 minutes from Center City, Philadelphia. This facility handles
acute to chronic orthopedic cases with specialization in sports medicine.
In addition to traditional modalities and therapeutic exercise equipment,
the center provides hands on clinical experience with isokinetic testing
on the Cybex 350, aquatic therapy in the aqua arc, work hardening programs,
and functional capacity evaluations. Student activities include: performing
initial evaluations, bimonthly progress notes, discharge summaries, TENS
instruction, participation in pre-season sports screenings, working with
nutritionists, observation of surgery and Back Injury Prevention Program
and providing one clinical inservice.

EGMC is a 432 bed acute care with 120 bed extended care teaching facility
and the only full service hospital in Elizabeth. Inpatient services include
an intensive care unit, same day surgery, a level II nursery, an oncology
treatment center, hemodialysis unit and adult and adolescent psychiatric
units. In addition, we have a full complement of outpatient services. The
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department consists of physiatry,
physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and audiology services.
We offer inpatient, outpatient and extended care patient services at two
locations. The West Facility at 925 E. Jersey Street provides both the
inpatient and outpatient services in our new location in the hospital.
The East Facility has a satellite unit for extended care patients who are
seen three times a week at 625 E. Jersey Street. The student affiliate
will be supervised by a therapist and will be assigned a varied caseload.
Diagnoses consist of acute medical/surgical cases including chest PT, gait
training, therapeutic exercise, total hip and total knee protocols; sub
acute and chronic orthopedic dysfunctions with heavy emphasis on lumbar
and cervical disorders. Alternate learning experiences available to students
include observation of any tests/procedures performed in the hospital and
surgery. Students may participate in interdepartmental rounds, staff inservices
and staff meetings.
Staff: 4 PTs, 2 therapist assistants, 5 aides and 1 secretary

On the first day of assignment students should report to their CI at
the building to which they are assigned (West); exact meeting time will
depend on work schedule of the CI. Students should expect an 8:00 AM to
4:30 PM workday. Facility does not provide housing. Prior to affiliation,
students must obtain boosters for measles and rubella. Dress Regulations:
street clothes with white lab jacket (or white blazer) or uniform. No blue
jeans or T-shirts. Clinic shoes or rubber soled shoes (no open toes) must
be worn. A name tag is required. There is a cafeteria in each facility,
a refrigerator and microwave oven is also available in the West Facility
for bag lunches. Directions: Take exit 13A and follow signs for Rt 1 &
9 South to Elizabeth; immediately following the double overpass turn right
at first traffic light (East Grand Street). Go one block to first traffic
light (Catherine Street) and turn left. Proceed to first traffic light
(East Jersey Street) and turn left. Elizabeth General Medical Center is
