We have the main hospital acute setting staffed with 4 PTs, and two PTAs for 219 beds. The diagnoses that we treat are primarily sports/orthopedic injuries, total joint replacements, back surgeries, as well as a small number of neurological diagnoses. The type of student that we are looking for in this setting would be some of the first year students or first or second affiliations that would require sound goniometric and muscle testing skills. We carry a varying load from 8-12 BID patients. We have two outpatient satellite facilities that are outside of the Birmingham downtown area, located approximately 20 minutes from the hospital They see a variety of patients as well, however their main emphasis is on the sports/ortho diagnoses. They are staffed with a PT and a PTA, and treat approximately 20-36 patients per day. The type of student that we are looking for in those clinics are those that may be in their first orthopedic affiliation and not up to a full demanding orthopedic load. They should have had instructions in evaluations and modalities, as well as therex.
Our main outpatient facility is located in the hospital on the main floor and it is staffed with approximately 10 PT and 10 ATCs. They work as a team and are responsible to treat 26-32 patients per day per team. They treat a variety of diagnoses also with primarily sports/ortho making up 75% of the practice. We also have four therapists that are specialists in treating the spine, and if you have a student interested in this rotation you would need to make note of it when you schedule your students. We also have a therapeutic pool for those students interested in adding hydrotherapy to their treatment regimen. Our outpatient center has a more demanding pace, and requires more advanced skills and more independent students. We reserve this setting for final affiliations or those that wish to specialize in the area of Sports medicine. Other perks that our center offers is: housing based on a first come first serve basis, a fully stocked medical library that has a number of different journals, a biomechanics lab where research is conducted, a million dollar surgical viewing room where students are allowed to view surgeries, as well as a fitness center where the student may work out for no expense. We also offer three inservices a week performed by different therapists and/or doctors at our facility, journal review, as well as ongoing continuing education that is available for no cost.

Hu Hu Kam Memorial Hospital is the primary care facility for the Pima and Papago Indians who inhabit the Gila River Indian Reservation.  Tribal members assumed control of the hospital on October 1,1995 by signing a 638 Contract with the Indian Health Service (IHS).  This is rather unique, in that most of the Indian hospitals throughout the country are still run by the IHS, a branch of the Public Health Service (PHS).
The hospital serves mainly as an outpatient clinic although there is an emergency room department and 12 inpatient beds for acute illness.  Patients with serious medical complications such as those requiring surgery or ICU stay are taken to one of the Phoenix area hospitals. The physical therapy department treats mostly patients referred on an outpatient basis but does treat a small percentage of inpatients as well.  The caseload is primarily orthopedic, but due to the fact that the tribe does not yet have a rehabilitation facility, the physical therapy department serves also as a “rehab” department for such conditions as spinal cord injuries,CVA's, and developmentally delayed children.
The challenges that come with treating a diverse caseload are further compounded by the prevalence and sequelae of type II diabetes among the Pimas.  Half of the Pima population develop type II Diabetes Mellitus by age 35, constituting the highest incidence of this disease in the world.  Scientists from the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), have been studying and conducting research among the Pimas since 1963. Their efforts have helped gain a better understanding of the disease and has led to advances in medical, dietary, and educational treatment of type II diabetes.
The physical therapy department holds a bi-monthly prosthetic/orthotic clinic with a contract prosthetist/orthotist.  Other opportunities include going on rounds with an orthopedic physician, podiatry, and radiology.  It may be possible to observe a surgery if interested.
The physical therapy department is well equipped with cardiovascular and weight machines, modalities, and NCV/EMG equipment. We try to expose our students to as many different diagnoses as possible while maintaining a teaching style that is comfortable for each individual student.  The atmosphere is casual and the pace fluctuates (generally slow to moderate) allowing students the opportunity to ask questions or seek guidance. We prefer to take second and third year students who have a high degree of autonomy and will be quick to reach a level of independence with performing evaluations and treatment. Most students report that this affiliation increased their level of confidence.  Moreover, students will gain exposure to a different culture and have the chance to interact with community members and participate in tribal events outside the hospital setting.
Hu Hu Kam Memorial Hospital offers the independent-minded student an opportunity to develop his/her skills to the fullest.
