Mission statement:
The mission of the College of Engineering is to advance the discovery and application of new knowledge in engineering and science and to educate and develop leaders of our technology-driven society.

Vision statement:
The vision of the college is to be a focal point for science and technology development and education within the University and the state, with an impact extending to regional, national and global dimensions. Within the context of the University as a state-supported, student-centered research university, the aims of the college are to provide outstanding programs of undergraduate, graduate and continuing education; to be a research leader advancing the frontiers of engineering and science through increasingly multidisciplinary initiatives; and to serve the citizenry and industry as an agent of technological, economic and educational innovation and advancement.

Significant events and accomplishments:

• A new RISE (Resources to Insure Successful Engineers) facility was dedicated in Du Pont Hall in April 1994. In September 1998, the RISE program celebrated its 25th anniversary.

• The Department of Civil Engineering was redesignated the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in October 1995. One year later, the Department of Electrical Engineering was redesignated the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

• In May 1998, Materials Science and Engineering attained departmental status.

• The first undergraduate degree in computer engineering was awarded in January 1999, and the first undergraduate degree in environmental engineering was awarded in May 1999. The first Engineering Outreach students enrolled in February 1994.

• The Department of Mechanical Engineering was ranked fifth in High Impact U.S. Universities, 1993-97, by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in its database, [www.isinet.com/hot/research]. The ranking is based on the average citations per paper in ISI-indexed, mechanical engineering journals between 1993 and 1997.

• Richard Wool, professor of chemical engineering, was named a semifinalist in the 1999 Discover Magazine awards for innovation, recognizing his development of a soybean-based composite material.

• More than half the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty members serve on the editorial boards of engineering’s most respected journals.

• In February 1993, the college celebrated 100 years of awarding degrees.

• The college moved into the renovated and enlarged Colburn Laboratory.
