Significant events and accomplishments:

• Numerous new facilities were constructed, including the Allen Laboratory, a state-of-the-art biocontainment facility for poultry disease research; Lasher Laboratory, a poultry diagnostic lab and headquarters for the Research and Education Center in Georgetown; Livestock Teaching Pavilion on the Newark Farm; and Pesticide Research Facility at the Research and Education Center; and the Charles and Eleanor Paradee Center in Dover.

• The Center for Agricultural Biotechnology was created.

• New curricula were developed in natural resource management, wildlife conservation, environmental soil science and bioresources engineering technology.

• The animal and food sciences Ph.D. program was expanded to include food sciences; a Ph.D. program in entomology was created.

• Longwood Graduate Program was ranked No. 2 among graduate programs.

• Extension and outreach efforts expanded, including the Children, Youth and Families at Risk; Nutrient Management; and Food Safety programs.

• Two faculty members serve as presidents of national professional societies: Don Sparks, Soil Science Society of America, and Bill Saylor, Poultry Science Society.
