40. The first two blacks to receive baccalaureate degrees are believed to have been Helen Handy (Powell) and Elbert C. Wisner, both of the June 1952 class, who majored in English and electrical engineering respectively; a third baccalaureate (in education) was awarded to Esther Holland (Porter) in September 1952. Helen Handy was one of the original plaintiffs in Parker v. University of Delaware.
