Why do we fear Friday the 13th?

Triskaidephobics, those who fear the number 13, may want to lay low this coming Friday, Aug. 13. Every year has at least one Friday the 13th, and some years contain three (the next will be in 2009). If you are a triskaidekaphobic, you’re in good company. Napoleon, J. Paul Getty, Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt all were superstitious about the number 13. The University of Delaware has an expert who is available to answer questions about this fear that has been experienced since ancient times. Thomas J. Fernsler, an associate policy scientist for UD’s Mathematics and Science Education Resource Center, is often referred to as "Dr. 13" for his extensive knowledge of triskaidekaphobia.
