Jerome Lewis, Institute for Public Administration, has received the 1998 Elmer B. Staats Public Service Career Award from the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). The institute is in the College of Human Resources, Education and Public Policy (CHEP).
Established in 1989, the Staats award honors the career of Elmer B. Staats, former comptroller general of the U.S., by recognizing faculty members who exemplify a career commitment to inspiring students to public service careers.
Jeffrey Raffel, School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy/CHEP, nominated Lewis for the award, noting that he "has certainly made a greater contribution to publicizing public service careers and encouraging student interest and participation in the field in a single state than any other individual. He has done this primarily through building new institutions in the state of Delaware and then serving as the first leader/ administrator of the institution.
"Dr. Lewis has institutionalized varied and innovative training grounds for public service," Raffel said.
Lewis is a cofounder of UD's Master's in Public Administration program and the Institute for Public Administration. He also established the Legislative Fellows Program, cosponsored by UD and the state of Delaware General Assembly, he cofounded the Delaware Association for Public Administration and founded the Delaware Taft Seminar for Teachers.
He received the award Oct. 16 at the NASPAA annual conference awards luncheon in Boise, Idaho.
