Campus vigil

More than 300 members of the University community attended the Vigil of Remembrance and Healing Oct. 15 on the north Mall near Main Street. The vigil was held to mourn the death of Matthew Shepard, 21, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, who was beaten and died a few days after his attack. The Newark ceremony was part of a nationwide effort to publicize the attack and demonstrate solidarity among people of all sexual orientations. The vigil was sponsored by the University Religious Leaders Organization and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transsexual Concerns Office at the University.
