University of Delaware students can pledge to be alcohol free for a week, and a variety of special activities are planned when the campus celebrates National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Oct. 15 through 24.
DUI Mock Trial-5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, in Rodney Dining Hall. A prosecutor, judge and defense attorney square off in this dramatization of a trial in which lives have been changed as the result of alcohol impairment. Participants will learn about the experience of being on trial as a consequence of drinking choices. One moment in time could be a life changed forever. Free and open to the public.
Dance-Billy D. Washington & the Wild Video Dance Party, 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16, Multipurpose Room, Trabant University Center. The hilarious comedy by Billy D. is just the start of dancing all night long to today's hottest songs and their videos on three large screens. Admission is $5 per person or $4 each for groups of 10 or more.
Basketball-Experience Midnight Mania with the Blue Hen hoopsters at 11 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16, in the Bob Carpenter Center. Participants will be able to personally challenge the Blue Hen hoopsters on the court at the UD Hoopa-Loopa-Thon. Come watch the team get an edge up on the competition at this late night session. Admission is free to UD students.
Party-Party Around the World at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 18, in Ray Street C. This educational program will take participants on a journey to explore different cultural traditions and learn how alcohol is viewed and used around the world. Mocktails will be prepared and served by the V-8 peer educators.
Lecture-"Discover the Truth: Human Physiology and Alcohol," 3:35-4:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 19, Room 120 Smith Hall. Nancy J. Nutt, Wellspring, will talk about the basic concepts of how alcohol affects the human body. She will address why alcohol affects individuals differently, its influences on mood, environment and social factor, and the short- and long-term health consequences.
Party-Delaware DRY (Drink Responsibly Y'all) presents an evening of music, casino games and other surprises from 8-11 p.m., Monday, Oct. 19, throughout the Perkins Student Center.
Quizzes-Quizzes for prize drawings, cards for the Wall That Alcohol Built, information and other resources will be available all day, Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Kiosk C in the Trabant University Center.
Candlelight Vigil-The Wall That Alcohol Built Candlelight Vigil is a time of remembrance, hope and healing, beginning at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, on the grass circle in front of the Morris Library. Through readings, songs and prayers, participants will have the opportunity to share stories of how alcohol has had an impact on their lives.
Presentation-Not My Child, a video presentation by the New Castle County Police Department, will be held from 8:30-10 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the Scrounge of the Perkins Student Center.
Presentation-Chris Lloyd, nationally recognized media scholar, will visit the campus on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Please see story on page 1.
Reference tables-"On the Rocks? Get Your Facts Straight!" reference tables will be set up in Kent, Pencader and Rodney Dining Halls, during meal times on Thursday, Oct. 22. Students will have the opportunity to talk to other students and community volunteers about various issues surrounding alcohol use on campus.
Performance-The Not Quite Ready for Bed Players, will present a program on diversity, date rape, alcohol, relationships, sexuality, sex and AIDS at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Scrounge of the Perkins Student Center.
Nightclub-Club Consciousness, a dry nightclub, featuring open mike, hip/hop and rap groups, will be held beginning at 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23, in the Scrounge of the Perkins Student Center. Mocktails will be served.
Competition-Hoopa-Loopa-Thon, an organized competition with basketballs, jump ropes and hula hoops, will be held from 8 p.m. to 1a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, in the Carpenter Sports Building. Bring your own team or join one when you arrive. Registration for all events begins at 8 p.m. in the lobby. Skills will be taught, and demonstrations will take place before each of three competitive events.
