The Black Student Union and HOLA will hold the annual Minority Student Leadership Conference from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.
This conference will focus on developing leadership through skills associated with deliberation, teamwork, problem-solving, communication, negotiation and mediation.
The full-day workshop will include African-American and Latino guest speakers and facilitators.
Students will participate in sessions throughout the day that will introduce them to various topics, provide them with some of the tools necessary to exhibit leadership on campus and in the local community.
Although the conference will focus on African-American and Latino student issues, it is open to all UD students.
There is no registration fee, and all meals will be included. The day will end with a "Cultural Extravaganza," where food and music from both cultures will be celebrated.

Bus trip to retrace Tubman's journey
The Center for Black Culture will host a Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad bus trip on Saturday, Oct. 24. The narrated tour of sites along the Delaware and Maryland Underground Railroad, where abolitionist Harriet Tubman led slaves to freedom, leaves at 7:30 a.m. from the center at 192 South College Ave.The return time is approximately 10 p.m.
Cost is $10 for UD students and $15 for the general public. For reservations or more information, call the Center for Black Culture at 831-2991.
The trip is cosponsored by the UD Cultural Programming Advisory Board.
Opera workshop in Loudis hall
The University of Delaware Opera Workshop, directed by Patrick Evans, will present performances of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, and 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 8, in Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.Bribery, perjured lovers, legal maneuvering and deception fill the ever-timely story line of The Mikado, which exposes the follies of 19th-century British politics under the thin veil of an exotic Far East setting: the mythical town of Titipu, Japan. Hilarious satire combines with delightful music in this Gilbert and Sullivan favorite.
Accompanist for the production is Julie Nishimura, with choreography by Lauren Gerhart. Costumes have been provided by the Chester County Gilbert and Sullivan Society.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students and may be purchased at the door or in advance at the Bob Carpenter Center or Trabant University Center box offices.
A lunch and learn series focusing on eldercare will be held from noon-1:30 p.m., Fridays, Oct. 30-Dec. 11, in the Ewing Room of the Perkins Student Center.The six-session program is designed for individuals who need help caring for older family members, who can benefit from practical tips on dealing with financial implications and who want to develop support systems.
The first session, on Oct. 30, will provide an introduction to the series and offer details on options and services available for older individuals. Various types of housing for the elderly also will be covered.
The other sessions will deal with: financial issues, Nov. 6; health issues, Nov. 13; legal issues, Nov. 20; death and dying concerns, Dec. 4; and care for the caregiver, Dec. 11.

"Mentoring into the Millennium: College Students Committed to Service" is the title of an all-day conference, scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Trabant University Center.Participants will learn about mentoring-a way to help children reach their full academic and social potential. Speakers will provide motivation, and training will be provided through a new mentoring manual that is used to train volunteers in schools all over Delaware.
Participants also will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from organizations that work with children in schools and interact with other college students who want to make a difference in the community.
The cost of the conference is $5 and includes refreshments, lunch and the training manual. Registration is limited to the first 200 students. A limited number of scholarships are available. Free bus transportation is being provided for students from Kent and Sussex counties.
