Fossil fun

A Fossil Find, especially for children in kindergarten through third grade, begins at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16, as part of Earth Science Week at UD. A large sandbox behind Penny Hall will be filled with sand from the Pollack Farm fossil site, located southeast of Smyrna. Children will be able to sift the sand for 18-million-year-old marine fossil shells and shark teeth, terrestrial and vertebrate fossil remains. In this photo William S. (Sandy) Schenck of the Delaware Geological Survey (DGS) shows three youngsters, all age 4, how to use sifters to find fossils. The young archaelolgists include (from left) cousins Danielle Lofink of Bear, Shannon Sullivan of Pike Creek and Ryan Sullivan of Bear. For more information on the fossil find or other Earth Science Week activities, call 831-2569.
