The Power of U" is the theme for the 1998 United Way campaign. The annual kickoff reception for this year's campus United Way drive is scheduled for Oct. 12, and the campaign will continue through Oct. 30, according to co-chairpersons Joyce Dennis Henderson and Karen Garrett, employee services.
This year's UD campaign goal is $200,000. Last year, UD employees exceeded the $185,000 goal.
"The annual campus United Way campaign offers all members of the University community an opportunity to help those who need assistance," Maxine Colm, vice president for administration, said. "The agencies and affiliated groups supported by the United Way touch a wide range of citizens, and many of us know someone who has benefited from the generosity of a United Way agency.
"I believe that our University employees contribute so willingly to the United Way campaign because they recognize the importance of the services and assistance that are provided," she added. "I am confident that, as in prior years, members of the University of Delaware family will again exceed our campus campaign goal and help the statewide effort surpass its objective."
According to President David Roselle, "Each year, the University of Delaware has responded enthusiastically to the United Way campaign. Members of the University community-its students, faculty and staff-have not only been active contributors, they also have offered their time and used their talents as volunteers to help others in need.
"I'm confident that this active participation will continue. And, as in years past, the University of Delaware will exceed its campaign giving goal and continue to serve as an example of generosity for others to follow."
The UD United Way video has been produced by Charles Marsh, University Media Services, Henderson said, and it will be premiered at the kickoff reception, at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12, in the Bob Carpenter Center.
An electronic video link will enable the program to be shown at the same time at the Lewes campus in Sussex County.
During the reception and program, campus solicitors will hear opening kickoff remarks from Roselle and 1998 United Way of Delaware Chairperson Stacey J. Mobley, senior vice president, external affairs, DuPont Co. and UD football color commentator Kevin Reilly.
Following the kickoff, there will be a reception in the Bob Carpenter Center with entertainment provided by Harvey Price, music, and his steel band.
