Pacesetters give '98 UW drive a head start

The Power of U" is the theme for the 1998 United Way campaign. The annual kick-off reception for this year's campus United Way drive is scheduled for Oct. 12, and the campaign will continue through Oct. 30, according to cochairpersons Joyce Dennis Henderson and Karen Garrett, employee services.

This year's UD campaign goal is $200,000. Last year, UD employees exceeded the $185,000 goal.

The Pacesetters Campaign on campus, chaired by Stephen Grimble, vice president and treasurer, began Sept. 21 and continues until Oct. 5. During this period, senior UD administrators and employees pledge to support the annual fund drive and set the pace of the general campaign.

"Each year the University looks to its pacesetters to get the United Way campaign off to a successful start, " Grimble said. "I am confident the 1998 pacesetters will provide the same leadership that their predecessors have in prior campaigns.

"There is an old adage that 'charity begins at home.' It is indeed true that our first obligation is to our immediate families, but I think everyone would agree that 'home' extends beyond the address where we reside, to the community in which we work and live.

"Each individual's gift to the United Way supports many worthwhile agencies. These agencies provide critical support and services to members of our extended community family who need assistance," Grimble said.

"I urge everyone to do their part to make this year's campaign a great success."

Members of the University's 1998 United Way Planning Committee, in addition to Garrett, Henderson and Grimble, are Pete Hayward, Office of the University Secretary; Charles Marsh and Kathleen Troutman, IT Media Services; Scott Mason, Trabant University Center; Kelley Morgan, occupational health and safety; Ed Okonowicz, public relations; Gregory Rumsey, agricultural services; and Richard Tarpley, marine studies.

As in years past, a UD United Way video has been produced by Marsh, Henderson said, and it will be premiered at the kick-off reception, at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12, in the Bob Carpenter Center.

An electronic video link will enable the program to be shown at the same time on the Lewes campus.

Employees featured in the video are Sylvia Brooks, educational studies; Maxine Colm, vice president for administration; Jane Fernsler, nursing; Jerry Hendricks, plant and soil sciences; William Johnson, physical education and recreation services; President David P. Roselle; and Art Yancey, University Media Services. Students in the video include Jamie Frankel, Amel Logan and Desiree Olivero, who are volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Alumna Linda Lauria and Kevin Reilly, UD football color commentator, also are featured.

During the program, campus solicitors will hear opening remarks from President Roselle and 1998 United Way of Delaware Chairperson Stacey Mobley, who is senior vice chairman of external affairs for the Du Pont Co., and Reilly, a motivational speaker.
