Alumna named 1st coach of varsity women's crew

Amanda Wemple has been named head coach of the Blue Hens' new varsity women's crew program. She will lead the team in its first year of varsity competition this fall after seven years as a club team.

Wemple earned her bachelor's degree in interior design from UD in 1995 and received a master's degree in sports management from Temple University this past May. While at UD, Wemple was a four-year standout member of the club crew team and served as vice president as a junior and president in her senior year.

Her coaching experience includes serving as women's rowing coach for the Wilmingon Youth Rowing Association, assistant swimming coach at Ursuline Academy, assistant rowing coach for the UD men's club team, assistant rowing coach at Temple University and assistant rowing coach for the UD women's club team.

The varsity crew team, expected to number more than 50 participants, will compete in approximately 10 events during the 1998-99 season and will practice on the Christina River in Wilmington.

One of the most rapidly expanding sports for women nationally, 97 schools sponsored varsity women's crew this past spring, including 54 at the NCAA Division I level.
