The annual MS 150 Bike to the Bike to the Bay begins at 8 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, when approximately 1,500 cyclists gather in Smyrna, then take to the back roads for the 75-mile trek to Dewey Beach and make the return trip on Sunday, Oct. 4. Each rider must raise $150 in pledges for the Delaware Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis National Society.
For the past six years, members of the University Derailleurs have participated in this fun and challenging event and have raised $18,000 for the MS society, according to team captain, Jerry Hendricks, plant and soil sciences.
"The Bike to the Bay is fun and well organized. There are rest stops along the way, and a support system for repairs, medical care or a lift if you can't make it to the finish line. Lunch is served in Milford, and dinner and breakfast are served at Crabbers' Cove in Dewey Beach. For a nominal fee, lodging is provided or you can make your own arrangements. Some riders like the challenge of riding nonstop, arriving at Dewey Beach in 2 1/2 hours; others may take eight hours," Hendricks said, adding he preferred the more relaxed approach.
Beginning last year, each participating team rode for an individual with MS. Althea McDowell, former program coordinator for affirmative action and multicultural programs, has been selected as the honorary member of the University Derailleurs for two years.
