Pentaborane gas alert

Callery Chemical Co. records indicate that the University of Delaware may have obtained a sample of Pentaborane (B5H9) between 1960-1987. It is necessary to determine if this material is on campus.

Pentaborane is an extremely dangerous chemical. This material is highly toxic by inhalation, skin absorption and ingestion. Worse than that, pentaborane may ignite spontaneously if exposed to air and may react explosively or form shock sensitive materials.

This material was shipped from Callery Chemical in a blue or silver one-pint or one-quart steel cylinder. Callery was not the only manufacturer of this material. Suppliers other than Callery may have different color and size containers. All laboratory occupants and users should be alerted that if they find this material to contact the Department of Occupational Health & Safety immediately. They must not move it. The Department of Occupational Health & Safety will probably work with the Environmental Protection Agency to assist with the transport and disposal of this product.

Additional information will be on the Department of Occupational Health & Safety web page in the near future, and additional details about this alert can be found at <http://www.udel. edu/OHS/new.html>.
