Liza Shoemaker, a UD standout women's lacrosse player, has been named NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of Delaware. The award, which is given to one woman from each state, honors female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership.
Shoemaker, who graduated with honors with a major in international relations and a minor in religion last May, was named UD's Outstanding Senior Female Athlete in 1997-98 and has played the last two seasons with the U.S. Women's Lacrosse Team. From Baltimore, she currently serves as an assistant lacrosse coach at Towson University.
Named the 1997 America East Player of the Year, Shoemaker was a three-time Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-American, a three-time all-region selection and a three-time all-conference selection.
From the state recipients, 10 finalists will be selected and announced later this month. All the Woman of the Year awardees will be honored Oct. 18 in Indianapolis.
This is the sixth time the Delaware winner has come from the University during the eight years of the program.
