Five UD student-athletes have earned America East Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards for their respective sports during the winter and spring season.
University student-athletes received awards in six of the 13 sports selected from the 22 sports sponsored by the league; no other conference member school received more than two awards.
The recipients were Mike Pegues (men's basketball), Dave Geesaman (both men's indoor and outdoor track), Tiffany Goldy (women's indoor track), Liza Shoemaker (women's lacrosse) and Krysta Pidstawski (softball).
Pegues, a junior from Forestville, Md., led the Blue Hens basketball team to the league tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth while earning first team, all-league honors. He led the team with 16.8 points per game. Enrolled in the College of Arts and Science, Pegues has a 3.23 grade point average.
Geesaman, a senior from Harrisburg, Pa., placed second in the East in the indoor 5,000 meters and was second in the 5,000 meters at the America East Outdoor Championships in track last season. He is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.681 gpa.
Goldy earned 10 career letters and placed 10th in the 5,000 meters at the 1998 America East Indoor Championships in track. A May graduate from Pitman, N. J., she majored in veterinary science and had a 3.90 gpa.
Shoemaker was a five-time All-American lacrosse midfielder, leading Delaware to two straight America East titles and a national ranking of 12th in 1998. An international relations major, she had a 3.29 gpa.
Pidstawski, a senior from Allentown, Pa., is a pitcher on the UD softball team with a 13-7 record and 1.76 earned run average.
She led the softball team to a school record of 27 wins and a trip to the America East championship game. She is a finance major with a 3.75 gpa.
