Tony Bennett, the singer who has bridged the generations, capturing the hearts of the MTV generation, their parents and grandparents, will appear at the University of Delaware at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 1, in the Bob Carpenter Center on the Newark campus.
Tickets, at $35 each, go on sale Tuesday, Aug. 31, at UD box offices in the Trabant University Center and the Bob Carpenter Center and at Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets will be available by phone, by calling Ticketmaster at 984-2000, where a convenience charge may be added.
Bennett, 73, is celebrating his 50th year in show business. Known as the singer's singer, Bennett was called, by the late Frank Sinatra, "the best singer in the business."
An eight-time Grammy Award-winner, he recently released The Playground, on the Columbia/Sony/Wonder/RPM music labels. The album, a family-oriented project, includes duets with Elmo, Kermit the Frog and Rosie O'Donnell.
Bennett also recently penned his autobiography, The Good Life, published by Pocket Books. The compelling account of the singer's personal and professional life begins with Bennett growing up in Astoria, Queens, and ends with his recent successes in the 1990s.
This December, the A&E Network will honor Bennett's 50th anniversary with a live special, Tony Bennett: An All-Star Tribute: Live by Request.
Over the past five years, Bennett has sold more than 3 million records worldwide; has had two albums, Perfectly Frank and Tony Bennett: MTV Unplugged, certified gold; and has received lifetime achievement awards from countless organizations.
Bennett entered his fifth decade in popular music by releasing an album version of his highly acclaimed MTV Unplugged appearance, which won him 1995 Grammy Awards for album of the year and for best traditional pop vocal performance.
The MTV generation first took Bennett to heart during his appearance with the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the 1993 MTV Video Awards ceremony.
"Tony Bennett has not just bridged the generation gap," The New York Times proclaimed, "he has demolished it. He has solidly connected with a younger crowd weaned on rock. And, there have been no compromises."
The son of a grocer and Italian-born immigrant, Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born in Queens in 1926.
"My scuffling years began to end in 1949," he says, "when I auditioned for a revue that Pearl Bailey was in at the old Greenwich Village Inn. Bob Hope heard me in the show and asked me to sing at the Paramount Theatre with him," Bennett recalls.
"A year later," Bennett says, "Mitch Miller auditioned me for Columbia Records. I sang 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams,' and it became my first hit. So, I started this crazy adventure that has lasted all these year. I had hits like 'Because of You,' 'Just in Time,' 'Stranger in Paradise' and 'Rags to Riches.' I became international in 1962 when I recorded 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco."'
