Farm and Home Field Day in Georgetown on Aug. 11

Enjoy the many fun-filled and educational activities taking place on Farm and Home Field Day for homeowners and farmers, scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources' Research and Education Center, Route 9, Georgetown. The event is free and open to the public.

Field tours by wagon will highlight agronomic and vegetable crops. Farmers also can consult with extension specialists about the latest research on watermelon varieties, weed and pest controls, including strategies for integrated pest control.

The Sussex Master Gardeners' demonstration garden-with a wide array of plantings-will be open for visitors. What began as an annual one-day display has developed into a large, permanent exhibit of plants, including herbs, shade-loving plants, annual flowers, perennial groundcovers, decorative grasses, roses and asters.

Local 4-H clubs will sponsor a petting zoo and food booths, and carriage and pony rides also will be available. Consumer and environmental groups will staff information booths.

Tickets for a traditional fried chicken lunch at noon will be for sale at the registration table.

Heart Walk organizers seeking campus 'captains'

Delaware will be participating in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk on Sunday, Sept. 12, on the grounds of Wilmington's Winterthur Museum, and members of the University community are encouraged to participate as members of a UD team.

Registration and check-in starts at 8 a.m. The walk begins at 9 a.m. and is over by 10:30 a.m. After the walk, a post party will be held featuring health screenings, music, an awards program and more.

Local companies will compete to provide walkers willing to gather sponsors and walk the scenic 3.1-mile course. Last year, UD was among the top 10 fundraisers.

Currently, UD organizers are looking for individuals willing to be "Heart Captains"- individuals who will try to recruit 10 walkers and collect their participants' pledge envelopes. No experience is necessary; information and instructions will be provided. Participants may be employees, family members and friends.

The American Heart Association will use the money raised for research and educational and community programs in the fight against heart disease and stroke, the nation's number one killer.
