Public mailing lists currently maintained on EMC2 that will continue to be used will soon be converted to UNIX mailing lists. Because most users are using new UNIX IDs, the e-mail IDs in the list must be updated.
Information Technologies staff will be programmatically converting the large lists on EMC2, such as all academic class lists or all secretaries. After these lists are converted, more information will be available on the main EMC2 conversion web page <http://www.udel. edu/topics/netscape/index.html>.
Mailing lists can facilitate communication to a group of people, and they provide an easy-to-remember e-mail address for mail sent by correspondents outside the organization.
Lists can be private or public. A private mailing list is generally a personal list entry in the address book of a desktop e-mail application. Only the person who created it uses this private list. If more than one person in a group needs to use a list regularly, a public list can be created. For example, departments often create public lists for all their staff members. When information needs to be circulated to everyone, the public list can be used by anyone in that department.
Responsible computing guidelines apply to the use of public mailing lists. Users should only send e-mail to lists which they are authorized to use.
