Alexander H.-D. Cheng, civil and environmental engineering, was awarded the 1999 Basic Research Award from the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics, National Research Council at its annual conference June 8, Vail, Colo. Cheng, who has won the Basic Research Award twice, was honored for his contribution in applying poroelasticity to borehold stability and hydraulic fracturing problems and for his study in anisotropic poroelasticity.
