Charlie Daniels Band to headline Country Music Fest

TNN and Music News' 1999 Living Legend Award-winner Charlie Daniels and his band headline this year's Country Music Fest at the University of Delaware's Summer Arts Festival. Scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 18, the show also features the vocal harmony of Ricochet and the irrepressible Doug Supernaw.

The Country Music Fest begins at 7 p.m., outdoors on the grounds of UD's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes. Tickets for all ages are $10 in advance and $12 at the gate.

The Charlie Daniels Band

Charlie Daniels' varied music style has ranged throughout his long career from gospel to bluegrass and from rhythm and blues to country. After playing and recording with a rock 'n' roll band, Daniels started his trek up country music charts as one of the most successful guitarists and fiddlers in Nashville. In 1973, he broke through as a recording artist with "Uneasy Rider" and just four years later topped country and pop music charts with his Grammy Award-winning single "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."

Winning the Living Legend award, which is one of country music's most respected honors, placed him in the company of some of the industry's most notable stars, such as Willie Nelson (1996), Dolly Parton (1994) and Johnny Cash (1989).

Ricochet

Winners of the ACM's and Country Weekly Magazine's Top New Vocal Group of the Year awards, Ricochet has been attracting more attention with each performance.

The group's second album, Blink of an Eye, has helped establish the band as a newfound success. But the members' roots in country music are much deeper than the recent attention would suggest.

Doug Supernaw

A singer who sings, speaks and lives flat-out with gusto, Supernaw is known for two recent concerts. The first, before a crowd of 65,000 at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show, saw him make his entrance sliding down a guy wire from the roof of the Astrodome. The second, in front of a Canadian audience, included Supernaw taking a frontal swan dive into a mud pit while singing and never missing a note.

His third album, You Still Got Me, includes both ballads and barnburners with gritty passion and edge.

Cosponsors of the event include the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware, Pepsi, Comcast, Froggy 99.9 FM and Jimmy's Grille.

Advance tickets are available at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Office, 120 Kings Highway; at the University's southern Delaware offices at 69 Transportation Circle in Dover and Route 18 at the Carter Partnership Center in Georgetown. After Aug. 1, tickets also will be on sale on at the Bob Carpenter Center on the UD Newark campus.
