Supporting college programs

When I became a Delaware Diamond this year, I contributed $10,000 to the College of Business and Economics to establish the Whittaker Incentive Grant for Minority Accounting Majors," Terry Whittaker, assistant dean, business and economics, said. "The grant is available to minority accounting majors who have achieved a B or better in Accounting 315. Twenty students will each receive $500 he or she can use for educational expenses or to keep until graduation.

"By establishing this grant, I am hoping to encourage minority students to major in accounting," Whittaker said. "I want to set an example for students that the administration cares about students' academic and professional success. I am hoping that, when the students learn the basics of financial management, this will open doors for them to obtain leadership positions that will have an impact on their community and the University, especially the College of Business and Economics."

Whittaker also contributed $5,000 to support the academic services of the College of Engineering Resources to Insure Successful Engineers program (RISE).

"By increasing diversity in these colleges, I hope to see the diversity in the marketplace increase as well," he said.

"My duties as assistant dean in the advisement center include the initiation of academic support and professional development programs for minority students," Whittaker said. "I also manage student academic affairs, oversee student advisement processes and special recognition events, such as Convocation and Honors Day, and manage the internship and co-op programs."
