Attention, crabby cooks! The 10th annual Coast Day Crab Cake Cook-Off will be held Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes. Entries, including favorite crab cake recipes, are due Aug. 6.
"The crab cake cook-off highlights one of Delmarva's most valuable seafood resouces-the blue crab," according to Doris Hicks, Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service, who is organizing the event.
Eight finalists will be selected from the entries, based on the submitted recipes, to compete for cash prizes-$150 for first place, $100 for second place and $75 for third place.
Past entries have ranged from French Confetti Crab Cakes to last year's winner, Wild and Spicy Crabburgers, by Nikki Achtermann of Rehoboth Beach, who will be one of the judges this year.
All recipes must include two pounds of blue crab meat, which will be provided to the contestants, who are responsible for other ingredients and cooking utensils.
Judging is based on originality, predominance of crab meat, taste and texture.
A recipe booklet, containing all finalist recipes from past and this year's cook-off, will be on sale on Coast Day.
