'Theatre on Ice' scheduled in Rust Ice Arena July 10

The Third International Theatre on Ice Competition, the newest form of figure skating, comes to the University of Delaware on Saturday, July 10. Seven teams from Russia and the U.S. will compete in the event that begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Rust Ice Arena.

Tickets, at $8 for adults and $5 for students, seniors and children, are on sale now through June 30 at the Bob Carpenter Center box office. After June 30, they will be available at the ice arena.

Theatre on Ice, which combines the grace of figure skating with the excitement of live theatre and dance, is very popular in Europe, coordinator Judy Frothingham said.

The French Figure Skating Federation recently recognized this form of skating, and members of the United States Figure Skating Association are considering the future development of this form of skating in the U.S.

The competition consists of six-minute group numbers with between six and 30 skaters. Solo skating is discouraged, but is permitted for 30 seconds of the number. Teams are judged on technical merit, originality and costuming, artistry, musicality and overall performance. More than 100 skaters are expected to participate.

The event is sponsored by the United States Figure Skating Association and the UD Skating Club. For more information, call 831-2868.
