Now through June 25, a dozen Ukrainian women legal professionals-judges, attorneys and law professors-are visiting Delaware, Washington, D.C., and New York City, meeting and interacting with American judges and attorneys in state and federal courts, law firms and government agencies.
The UD English Language Institute and Delaware attorney general's office are serving as cohosts to the foreign visitors under an intensive, three-week Law and Leadership program, an outgrowth of the Women's Vital Voices Conference held in Vienna in 1997.
In addition to the visits with American legal representatives, the visitors will meet with members of the United Nations Committee to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women, and the Ukrainian women will participate in roundtable discussions and open forums to be held at the offices of the Delaware attorney general.
Christopher Wolfe, English Language Institute and coordinator of the federal grant, pointed out that in the Ukraine "women represent less than 4 percent of the members of the Ukrainian Parliament, placing Ukraine at the very bottom of the newly independent states in terms of equal representation."
According to Jane Brady, Delaware attorney general, "We hope to assist in improving the status of women and women's rights in Ukraine."
During the past five years, the U. S. Information Agency has funded eight different groups of judges and attorneys from Ukraine to receive training through the University.
More than 100 legal professionals, including several members of Ukraine's Supreme Court, have taken part in these programs. ![]()
