Robert Dalrymple, Edward C. Davis Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been selected to receive the 1999 International Coastal Engineering Award by the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The award, which was established in 1977 to provide international recognition for outstanding leadership and development in the field of coastal engineering, will be presented at the division's Coastal Structures Conference, held this week, June 7-10, in Santander, Spain.
Dalrymple is cited for his "outstanding and continuing achievements and contributions to the advancement of coastal engineering through research, teaching and professional leadership." In 1996, he also received the ASCE Moffat-Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award and has served on the organization's Coastal Engineering Research Council since 1992.
In addition, he currently chairs the National Research Council/Marine Board Committee on Coastal Engineering Research and Educational Needs.
Dalrymple's research focuses on water wave mechanics, including wave propagation modeling and wave-current interaction, nearshore hydrodynamics and tidal inlets.
The founder and director of UD's Center for Applied Coastal Research since 1989, Dalrymple has published extensively in his field. He has coauthored or edited four books, including Water Wave Mechanics for Engineers and Scientists, written with R.G. Dean, which is the leading textbook for coastal engineering programs for wave theory.
He also has developed web sites including a Coastal Engineering page <www.coastal. udel.edu/coastal> and Java Applets for Coastal Engineering, which is available through the Internet as an educational tool for the public, as well as an international mailing list of more than 800 coastal engineers and scientists worldwide.
A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dalrymple received his master's degree from the University of Hawaii and his doctorate from the University of Florida. ![]()
