UD senior attackman John Grant has become just the second Blue Hen men's lacrosse player to earn first team All-American honors, as he was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division I All-American team.
Grant was one of a school-record four Blue Hen players honored for their play during the 1999 season. Senior midfielder Kevin Lavey was named to the third team, while senior midfielder Jim Bruder and senior defenseman Marc Traverso were both named honorable mention selections. Delaware's previous high was three All-Americans in 1984.
Grant became the first UD player to earn first team honors since Jim Albertson was honored during the 1970 season. Only four other UD players-Tom Stanziale (1992), Randy Powers (1985-86), Reagan Beck (1971) and Don Swan (1950-51)-have been named to the second team.
Grant, who earned USILA honorable mention All-American honors last season, led all NCAA Division I players in scoring in 1999 with a school record 110 points on 56 goals and a school record 54 points. His point total was the second highest season total in NCAA Division I varsity history. The owner of 96 career goals and 81 assists in just two season,
Grant also was named America East Player of the Year in May. Lavey, a four-year All-America East selection, earned All-American honors after switching from attack to midfield this season. He was the Hens' third leading scorer with 36 goals and 12 assists and finished second on the all-time UD goal scoring list with 153.
Bruder, another four-year All-America East selection, scored 28 goals and 12 assists in 1999 and finished with 117 career goals.
Traverso, a two-time All- America East pick, earned national honors despite missing two games with a knee injury. He posted 52 groundballs this season.
The Blue Hens, under head coach Bob Shillinglaw, posted the best season in school history this spring. The Hens won their first America East Conference title since 1994, advanced to the NCAA tournament for just the second time in school history and set a school record with a mark of 14-3.
