Carolyn Thoroughgood, marine studies, has established the John Allan Thoroughgood Legacy Scholarship, a merit scholarship for an undergraduate in chemical engineering, in memory of her late husband.
The Thoroughoods both graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965, shortly after their marriage. John Thoroughgood earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, with a business concentration.
In 1968, he earned his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland before launching a successful industrial career.
Carolyn Thoroughgood, who also has a doctorate from the University of Maryland in the field of nutritional biochemistry, joined the UD faculty in 1968 and has served as the dean of the College of Marine Studies since 1985.
Thoroughgood, who also is a member of the UD Legacy Society, said that her late husband had a strong dedication and commitment to the University of Delaware.
"John felt that much of his success was due to the wonderful education he received here at the University, so it's a fitting tribute to him to be memorialized in this way," she said. "The scholarship in his honor will contribute to the education of future chemical engineering students who will carry on the University's tradition of excellence."
