Historian to discuss 'War and Romantic Adventure'

Raymond Callahan will speak at the Annual Faculty Lecture of the University of Delaware Library Associates at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, in the Morris Library Class of 1941 Lecture Room.

His topic will be "War and Romantic Adventure: Some Thoughts on the Legacy of The Great War."

Callahan, a professor of history and associate dean for outreach in the College of Arts and Science, also administers the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program.

His publications include Churchill's Retreat from Empire, Burma 1942-1945; The Worst Disaster: The Fall of Singapore; and The East India Company and Army Reform 1783-1798.

He has contributed chapters to other publications, has published widely in scholarly journals and has lectured extensively in the United States and abroad.

Callahan joined the UD faculty in 1967. He has served as the John F. Morrison Visiting Professor of Military History in the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and was a fellow on the Department of Army Historical Advisory Committee.

He has received both a Woodrow Wilson and a Danforth Fellowship. In 1990, Callahan received the UD Excellence-in-Teaching Award.

A graduate of Georgetown University, he holds master's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University.

Tall ships at Riverfront on Commencement weekend

The Tall Ships Delaware Festival will be held from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 29-30, in the revitalized Riverfront area of Wilmington.

Nearly 20 tall ships will be docked at three locations on the Christina River-Port of Wilmington, Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park and First USA Riverfront Arts Center. Ships include the Pride of Baltimore (175 feet), HMS Bounty (169 feet), Kalmar Nyckel (139 feet), Young America (130 feet) and others. There will be food, music, exhibitors and activities for all ages.

Dennis Edwards and The Temptations will perform at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 29, at Tubman-Garrett Park. Tickets are $10 per day for adults and $5 for kids (6-11).
