William R. Latham, economics, has endowed the Sally M. Latham Memorial Poetry Scholarship in memory of his late wife, who died last July.
Mrs. Latham, who enjoyed writing and reading poetry, taught writing in the Writing Program of the English department and received its excellence-in-teaching award for adjunct faculty.
"Poetry and teaching writing were two main interests and the scholarship seemed a way to honor her nonprofessional and professional activities," Latham said.
A graduate of the University of Illinois, Mrs. Latham held a master's degree from the University. Before teaching in the Writing Program, she worked first as a secretary in what was then the College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy and later as thesis and dissertation editor in the Office of Graduate Studies.
The merit scholarship will be awarded annually to a student completing his or her junior year and demonstrating accomplishment in poetry writing. This year, Heather Nicole Kirn, a senior English major, was the first recipient.
She was selected by a committee of English faculty members and the award was announced at the College of Arts and Science Honors Day Convocation.
