Memorial service set for Janice Jordan Coleman

A celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Janice Marie Jordan Coleman, director of the Student Services for Athletes Program, associate director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development and assistant professor of education, will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 25, in the Clayton Hall auditorium.

A reception in Room 101B of Clayton Hall will immediately follow the service for the late Dr. Jordan, who died June 22 at the age of 51 after a two-year battle with cancer.

A native of Lexington, N.C., Dr. Jordan received a bachelor of science degree from Antioch College, a master of education degree from UD and a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Maryland.

She began her career at UD in 1970 as a staff adviser in the Student Special Services Program.

According to Zenobia Hikes, student life, "During her 28 years at UD, Dr. Jordan touched the lives of thousands of students in her roles as counselor, teacher, adviser, mentor, supervisor, role model and friend. Master's degree candidates remember Dr. Jordan as a woman who was passionate about her work and dedicated to helping her students learn more about themselves.

"Dr. Jordan's professional and faculty colleagues benefited greatly from her work as a consultant, committee member and expert in the field of student development and multicultural issues."

Considered a pioneer in the field of student services for athletes, Dr. Jordan was the author of journal articles that set the tone for athletic academic support programs nationally. She is credited with establishing and implementing the Student Services for Athletes Program at UD.

Dr. Jordan was a founding member and past president of the Black Alumni Organization. At the time of her death, she was serving as the chairperson of the Governor's Advisory Council on Minority Health and was a consultant to the People's Settlement Community Center.

She held a number of other affiliations, including membership in the Delaware Valley Association of Black Psychologists, American Counseling Association, National Association of Academic Advisers for Athletes and Association of Multicultural Development.

A memorial fund has been established in Dr. Jordan's name. Those wishing to contribute should send a check, made payable to the UD Student Services for Athletes, in memory of Dr. Janice Jordan Coleman.
