UD Press book earns 'Choice' award

John Ferguson Weir, written by alumna Betsy Fahlman and published by the University of Delaware Press, has been selected by Choice as one of the Outstanding Academic Books of 1998. Choice is the official review publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries, Division of the American Library Association.

The book is a study of the artistic career and life of John Ferguson Weir (1841-1926), who was made director of the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1869 and spent the next 44 years there developing the first art school on an American campus. Weir is possibly best known for his paintings depicting American industry and labor.

A graduate of Mt. Holyoke, Fahlman received her master's degree in 1977 and doctorate in 1981 in art history from UD. She taught at Franklin and Marshall College and Old Dominion University before joining the faculty of the University of Arizona. She also is the author of Guy Pène du Bois: The Twenties at Home and Abroad; The Spirit of the South: The Sculpture of Alexander Galt; Pennsylvania Modern: Charles Demuth of Lancaster; and Guy Pène du Bois: Artist About Town.
