Achieving Excellence and Equity in Mathematics and Science Education," was the focus of a Delaware Policy Forum, held March 23, in the Trabant University Center.
Participants were welcomed by Iris T. Metts, Delaware secretary of education; Claiborne Smith, president of the Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education; and Daniel Rich, dean of the College of Human Resources, Education and Public Policy.
Pascal D. Forgione Jr., past superintendent of schools in Delaware and currently commissioner of education statistics in the U.S. Department of Education, reviewed the findings of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
Other speakers included William H. Schmidt, executive director of the U.S. National Research Center for TIMSS, who spoke on "What Do the TIMSS Data Tell Us About Curriculum and Instruction?"; Terry Joyner, supervisor of learning in the Colonial School District, who spoke on "Strategies for Achieving Excellence and Equity in Mathematics and Science Education"; and Paul Kimmelman and David Kroeze, school superintendents from West Northfield and Northfield, Illinois, respectively, who spoke on "A Model for Achieving Excellence: The First in the World Consortium." The forum ended with group discussions on "Success Factors for Delaware."
The forum was sponsored by the UD Mathematics and Science Education Resource Center, the Delaware Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education and the Delaware Department of Education.
