Music of the Andes to bring panpipes and rattles to Mitchell Hall

Andes Manta will bring the music of the Andes to the University of Delaware during a performance on Friday, April 16, in Mitchell Hall. Andes Manta, a quintet performing the vibrant music of the Andes, will appear at UD at 8 p.m., Friday, April 16, in Mitchell Hall.

Hailing from Quinto, Ecuador, the quintet performs on more than 35 different instruments, ranging from 6-foot long panpipes and Andean flutes to goat toenail rattles and Spanish guitars.

Although the band neither reads nor writes music, its dynamic performance never fails to bring audiences to their feet.

The group has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum as well as for the Discovery Channel.

Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $6 for children 12 and under. They are available at all UD box offices. Junior series to offer 'Phantom' for children April 11 in Mitchell Hall

The University's Junior Performing Arts Series concludes at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 11, when Theatreworks USA will present Phantom of the Opera in Mitchell Hall.

The hour-long musical tells the story of the phantom who once haunted the Paris Opera House.

Based on the story by Gaston Leroux, the production unfolds in a flurry of activity that leads to an exciting conclusion when the phantom's identity is revealed and the mystery is solved.

Tickets, at $10 for the general public, $8 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $6 for students and children, are available at all UD box offices. Credit card orders may be placed by calling 831-2204 or by calling Ticketmaster at (302) 984-2000, where a service charge may apply.

Lunchtime presentation to focus on self-esteem enhancement for women

Cherie Weiss and Nan Schiowitz, psychologists with the Brandywine Center, will present "The Journey Within: Self-Esteem Enhancement for Women" from noon-1 p.m., Friday, April 9, in Room 130 of the General Services Building. The workshop is designed to introduce women to active self-esteem efforts that focus on the inner-self. Specific strategies for "growing" self-esteem over time will be presented in a format that combines information giving with experiential work.

Participants will learn to feel more confident in their everyday lives, to be more nurturing toward themselves, and to celebrate their accomplishments.

Participants may bring their lunches; beverages will be provided.

Alumni & student art exhibits scheduled on campus during April

Three art exhibits are scheduled in April at the University of Delaware featuring works by alumni and graduating master's degree students.

DEcades, featuring works by visual communications alumni, will be on view from April 5-23 in the Department of Art Gallery, 102 Recitation Hall. Hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Those with works on display are all professionals in the field of design.

Master of Fine Arts I, a body of creative work by students completing their MFA degrees, will be on view from April 9-18; and Master of Fine Arts II, a similar exhibit featuring works by different students, can be seen from April 23-May 2. Both exhibitions will be held in the University Gallery, Old College. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays; and
1-5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays.

Opening receptions, which are free and open to the public, are scheduled from 4:30-6:30 p.m on Friday, April 9; and Friday, April 23, in the Gallery.
