Has something like this ever happened to you?
* Your colleague in Montana sent you the formatted text of a journal article--as an e-mail attachment. Great! But, how do you use Microsoft Word to edit an e-mail message?
* You received an e-mail message containing a web address. It's a long address, filled with odd characters. You meticulously retype the address into your web browser. But, instead of seeing the expected web site, you see a message indicating the browser can't locate the site. You recheck your spelling and realize it's because you made a typo.
Such e-mail headaches will disappear when you use an e-mail program made to work with a web browser such as Netscape Communicator.
"We want to change the way people use e-mail because browser-based e-mail will provide more function," Leila Lyons, User Services, explained. "We will be supporting popular, browser-based e-mail from Netscape and Microsoft."
Browser-based e-mail provides features such as easy methods for attaching and downloading files and documents and direct web page access, which are not available in e-mail programs such as EMC2. Integrating your e-mail with the web will save time in locating information, responding to correspondents and finishing daily tasks.
"The migration to browser-based e-mail will improve our use of the University's information environment, which is web-based," Susan Foster, vice president, Information Technologies (IT), said.
Support for the migration to browser-based e-mail will accommodate administrative staff members who have been using EMC2 during most of their career at the University.
"We will provide tools and personal help to individuals who have e-mail archived in EMC2, so they can move needed e-mail messages to the new system," Foster said.
You can get started with your migration on the web by linking to <http://www.udel.edu/topics/netscape/index.html>.
Here you will find links to a checklist of steps that are necessary to migrate, user education classes about Netscape Communicator's e-mail and an online version of the user education class handout.
You can also download a pre-configured version of Netscape Communicator (version 4.5) from the University's software download page <http://www.udel.edu/sw/>.
