Memorial service set March 30 for S. Samuel Arsht on Wilmington Campus

Prominent Wilmington attorney, community activist and friend and supporter of the University, S. Samuel Arsht, died March 3.

Mr. Arsht and his wife, Judge Roxana Cannon Arsht, were the individuals most instrumental in the planning and construction of Arsht Hall, which houses the University's Academy of Lifelong Learning. In a March 6 editorial honoring Mr. Arsht, the News Journal called the building a "memorial that will honor both Sam and Roxana Arsht for years to come...."

Mr. Arsht was an enthusiastic member of the academy since 1983. At a 1991 ceremony when he received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University, he said. " When I stopped going to my office almost seven years ago, I thought I knew all I needed to know for my own well-being. I was wrong. I now know that it's what you learn after you know it all that really counts."

Born in Wilmington in 1910, Mr. Arsht was a partner with the Wilmington law firm Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell. He headed a commission to revise and codify state law in 1949, was counsel for the former State Highway Commission from 1955-69, and chaired the committee to overhaul General Corporation Law, which was approved by the General Assembly in 1967.

President David P. Roselle said, "Sam Arsht used his multifaceted talents to serve his profession, the community at large, the state of Delaware and the Academy of Lifelong Learning, where he served on the governing council. The gift he, with Roxana, provided to the University to build Arsht Hall is an enduring testimony of his generosity and spirit and his regard for the University of Delaware. I join with Roxana, his family and his colleagues at the academy and in the community in mourning an accomplished and remarkable man and friend."

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, at Arsht Hall on the Wilmington Campus.
