Bartol professor named APS fellow

Qaisar Shafi of the Bartol Research Institute at UD was named a fellow of the American Physical Society during the organization's November 1998 meeting.

No more than one half of one percent of the APS membership are awarded the status of fellow. Shafi's election to the APS fellowship recognized his outstanding research contributions to physics.

At least five other APS fellows are included among the Bartol faculty, and another five serve UD's Department of Physics and Astronomy .

In November 1997, Shafi became one of 18 senior-level scientists -- including four from the field of physics -- to earn the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award from Germany's Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The Humboldt prize recognized Shafi's efforts to shed light on the physics of the very early universe, including the formation and composition of large-scale structures such as galaxies.
