Performance appraisal information

To: Professional and Salaried Staff

From: Maxine Colm, Vice President for Administration

Subject: Performance Appraisal Program

The annual performance appraisal process provides supervisors with an opportunity to review the job performance of professionals and salaried staff in their units. The appraisal form encourages the active participation of employees in the appraisal process. The self-appraisal worksheet requires the employee to identify accomplishments, set performance goals and indicate career development interests. Supervisors are expected to comment in narrative form about the individual's job performance and complete 11 performance rating factors. An improvement plan is included for those employees whose performance requires special attention.

To expedite the evaluation process, appraisal forms for salaried and professional staff are located under Employee Information on the UD home page. The forms are available in WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS and WordPerfect for Windows, Microsoft Word for Windows and Microsoft Word for Macintosh versions. Paper appraisal forms also are available from the Office of Employee Services.

Training sessions will be held in March to familiarize supervisors and employees with the performance evaluation process. To register for one of these sessions, please go to <http://www.udel.edu/EmployeeTraining/perfappr.html> and select either supervisory or employee workshops and complete the form that will be forwarded to the Employee Training Office.

The first session is designed to enhance the evaluation skills of supervisors as well as provide an overview of the Performance Appraisal process. Supervisory workshops will be held from 10 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, March 3; from 1-3 p.m., Thursday, March 11; and from 1-3 p.m., Monday, March 15.

The second session acquaints employees with the major elements of the annual performance appraisal system. Participants review the steps involved in identifying their major responsibilities and in completing the self-appraisal worksheet. Workshops are scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon, Monday, March 1; and from 1-3 p.m., Tuesday, March 9.

The evaluation process must be completed on or before April 15, and all requisite forms must be submitted to the Office of Employee Services by that date.
