The College of Engineering will celebrate National Engineers Week, Sunday, Feb. 21, through Saturday, Feb. 27, with several lectures and events as part of the "Turning Ideas into Reality" celebration.
The events begin on Monday, Feb. 22, with a gathering of UD's College of Engineering community. Faculty, students and staff will meet from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the front lobby of Colburn Laboratory, for an opening reception.
On Tuesday, Feb. 23, Robert E. Green Jr., director of the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation and the Theophilus H. Smoot Professor of Material Science and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University, will give a lecture on "Nondestructive Materials Characterization" at the Center for Composite Materials. The lecture, which will begin 4 p.m., will showcase engineering research in the area of innovative nondestructive materials evaluation and characterization methods. Faculty, students and staff are invited.
Howard E. Cosgrove, chairman and CEO of Conectiv and a member of the UD Board of Trustees, will speak to college faculty and staff, graduating seniors, graduate students and their families on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at the "Order of the Engineer-Ring Ceremony" to be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
On Thursday, Feb. 25, the Society of Women Engineers and the Business Industry Education Alliance will hold an informational meeting to introduce young women to the opportunities in and challenges of careers in engineering and the sciences. High school students have been invited to attend the sessions, which will be held at various campus locations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Delaware Council of Engineering Societies will present "'99 Engineers Week Celebration" on Thursday, Feb. 25, to celebrate the accomplishments of professional engineers of Delaware. The event, beginning at 5:30 p.m., will be held at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington. For ticket information, call 831-6315.
The celebration concludes on Friday, Feb. 26, with "Engineering Pride T-Shirt Day" at UD. Students and others are encouraged to wear any T-shirt or sweatshirt that promotes engineering.
